Mesoscale Climatology and Variation of Surface Winds over the Chukchiâ•fiBeaufort Coastal Areas

چکیده
The detailed mesoscale climatology of surface winds in the Chukchi–Beaufort Seas and adjacent Arctic Slope region is analyzed using the recently developed Chukchi–Beaufort High-Resolution Atmospheric Reanalysis (CBHAR).Within the study area, surface winds are mainly driven by the prevailing synoptic weather patterns of the Beaufort high andAleutian low and are further modulated by local geographic features through thermodynamic and dynamic processes. Sea breezes, upor downslope winds, and the mountain barrier jets are all clearly captured by CBHAR. Sea breezes emerge in June–September and last most of the day, with a maximum spatial extent 100 km inland and 50 km offshore and maximum speed around 1–3m s in the late afternoon [;1500 Alaska standard time (AKST)]. Thermodynamic impacts ofmountains on the surfacewinds vary from time to time.Drainage flows begin to build at the mountaintop in September and reach the strongest during November–February, occupying the entire slope. Upslope winds demonstrate a clear diurnal cycle during summer, starting to build around 0900 local time, reaching themaximumstrength around 1500 local time and continuing until 2100 local time. Themountain barrier jets (MBJs) are found to bemost active around theChukotkaMountains during cold seasons. Both sea breezes andMBJs are also subject to variations and changes in response to adjusted large-scale atmosphere circulation. Storm activities can inhibit the development of sea breezes.Different responses from theBeaufort high andAleutian low to anomalies in large-scale circulations play a vital role in the variations of MBJ activities over the Chukotka Mountains.

Summer time variation and unexpected nocturnal peak in precursors related Surface ozone concentration in air over a tropical coastal regionof Southern Tamil Nadu, India
Surface ozone (Surface O3)is a secondary pollutant and there are only limited studies on ozone in South India. Studies have revealed a strong correlation between higher ozone levels and warmer days. Surface O3 along with its precursors like NO2, CO and CH4 are being measured at Kanyakumari (8.0780° N, 77.5410° E), TamilNadu, India and in this paper we present the summer time variation of ozone ...

T he mesoscale atmospheric flow near coastlines with rugged, steep terrain is often very complex and can be quite intense (Young and Winstead 2005). During the cool season, extratropical cyclones over the Pacific Ocean frequently make landfall along the southeast coast of Alaska. Interaction of these synoptic-scale disturbances with the steeply rising coastal terrain (see Fig. 1) can produce st...

متن کاملThe role of sea land air thermal difference, shape of the coastline and sea surface temperature in the nocturnal offshore convection
Nocturnal precipitation cells and lines occur near the coastline in the whole Mediterranean basin in all seasons. The precipitation events are mainly located in areas where coastal mountain ranges and rivers enhance convergence though the interaction of nocturnal mesoscale and local flows (land breeze, katabatic and drainages winds) with prevailing synoptic wind or with other mesoscale and loca...
متن کاملSpatial patterns in seasonal and interannual variability of chlorophyll and sea surface temperature in the California Current
[1] Physical forcing and biological response within the California Current System (CCS) are highly variable over a wide range of scales. Satellite remote sensing offers the only feasible means of quantifying this variability over the full extent of the CCS. Using six years (1997–2003) of daily SST and chlorophyll imagery, we map the spatial dependence of dominant temporal variability at resolut...
